At The Center of Functional Medicine, we recognize weight gain (in most cases) is only a symptom; and success cannot be achieved if we only try to “fix” the symptom.
In the case of weight gain or the inability to lose weight, the causes can be diverse and extremely complex.
There are two major categories of weight gain or the inability to lose weight:
- Your body is in a stress-induced fat storing mode.
This happens when your body is in survival mode; meaning that it is holding onto its main fuel source. This results from either a physical, chemical or emotional stress that is acting on the body. Your body simply tries to preserve its fuel supply (fat) which is its way of preparing for more of the same; hardship and stress.
- Your body has it “too easy.”
Yes, in some cases “too easy” can be a problem and this is the least common of the two. The easiest way to explain this is simply applying what we know about animals to humans. When times are easy, many animals take advantage of excess consumption, and their behavior of eating certain foods promotes fat storage. In addition, they strive to preserve fat and energy such as in hibernation.
Our success with helping our clients lose weight is largely due to first identifying the imbalances and restoring balance to the body. We have labeled this procedure as “Natural weight loss,” because the body is given what it needs and anything that is causing imbalance is removed. When the body is in balance, it simply does not hold on to excess weight.
This form of weight loss is easily maintained since is restores the function of the body and avoids creating more imbalances such as aggressive calorie restricted diets, or chemical laced nutrient deficient weight loss foods.
With the proper approach, everyone can maintain a lean and healthy physique.
Our Natural Weight Loss programs include but are not limited to:
- Laboratory testing to identify root cause(s) of weight gain
- Metabolic testing to track progress and status
- Setting personal dietary strategies and goals
- Exercise protocols specific to weight loss and metabolic functioning
- Lifestyle guidance, goal setting, and mentorship
